The format of the Club’s internal competitions and entrance fees shall be decided by the Committee. The rules will apply to the following competitions: –
Ladies Championship; Men’s Championship; Junior Championship; Pairs (random draw); Longman Mixed Pairs; Handicap Singles; Geoffrey King Cup; Pudda Miller Cup; and the Ted Ball Two Wood Trophy.
Please do not enter these competitions if you are not available for finals weekend (as stated in the handbook). Any member doing so will be banned from next year’s competitions.
- Competitors must be members of Writtle Bowling Club.
- The challenger (the name that appears first in the draw) must arrange a date and time for the match with the opposition, giving at least 3 days notice. Dates shall be offered within 2 weeks of the ‘play by’ date. Failing this, the opponent becomes the challenger.
- Three dates shall be offered, preferably in different weeks and on different days (including one weekend). The time for commencing a match shall be mutually agreed.
- All matches to be completed by the ‘play by’ dates (stated in the Writtle Bowling Club handbook and on Bowlr). Under only very exceptional circumstances will extensions be granted. If a match is rained off, the match must still be completed by the ‘play by’ date. If competitors are not available to play, they will forfeit the match and the opposition will automatically go through.
- Competitors not on the green ready to play within 30 minutes of the agreed start time will forfeit the game, unless there are exceptional circumstances and the opposition is willing to play at a later time or date.
- Where matches are abandoned due to inclement weather or other exceptional circumstances, if less than 12 ends have been played, the match must be replayed; if 12 or more ends have been played, the remaining ends to be played (on the same rink if possible) by the ‘play by’ date.
- Singles matches will be the first person to reach 21 shots. The challenger to organise a competent marker for singles matches. Pairs matches will consist of 21 ends: if required, an extra deciding end will be played. The competitor(s) who wins the toss of a coin will determine who will have the mat in the deciding end.
- Two trial ends may be played as agreed by the competitors, including how many bowls to be played.
- The dress code will be in accordance with The Writtle Bowling Club Rule Book and Byelaws, except finals weekend when the dress code is whites.
- In relation to both Pairs competitions, the players taking part in the first match shall constitute the team. Only one substitute per team will be allowed. The substitute may play in any position.
- a) For the Pairs competition, the pairings are drawn randomly by the Competition Secretary. Any substitute will be drawn from the reserve list or the Competition Secretary will ask a club member of an equal or higher handicap that has not already played in or been entered to play in the competition if he or she would like to play.
- b) In relation to the Longman Mixed pairs, players may choose their own partner. A substitute may be chosen, providing that person has not already played in or been entered to play in that particular competition and can only act for that particular team. The substitute should be of an equal or higher handicap and must be the same gender as the player they are replacing.
- The result shall be entered on Bowlr and the scorecard placed in the Competition Secretary’s pigeon hole. Scorecards must detail the competition and names of the competitors.
- If any disagreement should arise, a complaint shall be made to the Competition Secretary within 2 days of the event. This complaint shall be placed before the Committee for a ruling: any decision by the Committee will be final.
- Bowls England rules apply in all other respects.
